When you think of gemstones you do generally think of a nice ring set with a lavish gem, however gemstones have been used throughout history in a variety of ways, the crown jewels being one of the and such things as plates, combs and other decorative items.
At Hatton Jewellery we have a wide range of gemstones and while we do not stock every single one of them, we work in conjunction with some amazing stone merchants who can get their hands on just about any gemstone you can think of.
Gemstones come in a wide variety of colours this is based on their trace elements, the physical difference in their crystals and the way they refract light. As well as colours, they can be all different shapes when cut, like a diamond, naturally gemstones are rough stones that are necessarily shiny or pretty to look at. They are then to be cut and polished to best compliment their appearance by experienced lapidaries, gem cutters, who work to the stone to be enhance their colour and shine.
There are so may gemstones that we simply cannot name them all however there are only 4 gemstones that are called precious stones, they are diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. These stones are precious due to their rarity and beauty. All other gemstones are known as semi-precious stones, this does not mean that they are not valuable as if they are of decent quality and colour their prices can be of significance.
Depending on what part of the world you are looking at, the age of gem-set jewellery differs, the Egyptians were pioneers in the use of gemstone jewellery dating around 3100bc. Although, the Sumerians of Mesopotamia are credited with creating some of the earliest known gem-set items of jewellery, dating around 4500bc.
There have been so many different monumental periods during the timeline of gem-set jewellery and we are grateful to hold pieces of gem-set jewellery from different time periods in store.
